QTMRF 02 - QuickTime & CopyBits (1-May-95)
Q We have hardware that can do bit blats, rescale images, change pixel depths,
convert color spaces, and dither while performing any of these operations. We
want to use this hardware to accelerate these operations on the Macintosh, and
particularly, to accelerate QuickTime. The most obvious way to do this is to
patch the CopyBits routine, and replace the operations we do in hardware. Will
this work? Does QuickTime use CopyBits to draw into the frame buffer?
A Unfortunately, we cannot provide information that Apple considers private and
proprietary, including information relating to the internal structures and/or
mechanisms of QuickTime. In addition to protecting Apple's interests, this
policy helps to maintain the compatibility of developer's products by
preventing them from creating hardware and/or software products that are
dependent on technology that could become obsolete when Apple introduces new
versions of its system components, such as QuickTime.
You might want to consider PCI as an avenue for you to apply your acceleration
technology.
